Rally at the UN

This past Monday, September 29th, the 69th Session of the United Nations General Assembly was met with the US-Mauritanian Diaspora group, fighting for justice and public awareness for issues concerning the slavery and ethnic cleansing taking place in Mauritania. With hopes to influence the UN to meet its demands for their countries human rights violations, this group rallied for slavery, racial discrimination, ethnic cleansing, and land expropriation. The protesting group wrote to Ban Ki-moon, Secretary General of the United Nations to voice their opinions.

The letter discussed current President Mohamed Ould Abel Aziz, who was in attendance at the General Assembly, along with President Taya, and their influence over the ethnic cleanings along with other climate change issues such as deforestation. It brings up the fact that Mauritania ranks number 1 out of 162 countries on a global slavery index produced in 2013. With three abolitionists already in jail for their actions to help free slaves, along with extra-judicial killings and mass deportations of various respected human rights organizations, it is time for the United Nations to recognize these atrocities against humanity.

The US-Mauritanian Diaspora ultimately wants the General Assembly to acknowledge that Mauritania is a mixed race and cultured country; to deny a citizen their basic rights on these principles will not occur without a fight. With the help of the UN, international human rights can be granted and enforced by the countries government so that all will have a safe and equal place to call home.
